How To Use A K-Cup Without A Keurig; Homemade Teabag Style

I was recently mailed some free samples of coffee. This is normally good news but I’ve yet to join the Keurig craze. I hate throwing away anything practical and to be honest was out of coffee. I was nearly desperate and Googled “how to use a K-Cup without a Keurig”. I couldn’t find anything that wasn’t overly complicated or wouldn’t leave me drinking coffee grounds. So I decided to do it the best way I knew how. My way! A few years ago I threw away my coffee maker, it always leaked and I decided not to replace it. Instead I use “tea bag” coffee. It’s my new fav as it’s easy, fast, and not that messy. So this is how to use a K-Cup without A Keurig, homemade “teabag” style .

You need:

1 Coffee Cup

1 Coffee Filter

1 K-Cup

1 Piece of string

Water (amount of water is a personal preference.)

Step One:

Open your K-cup.

Step Two:

Pour your coffee in to the filter.

Step Three:

Bunch up the top of the filter.

Step Four:

Tie the string around the filter tightly to prevent coffee grounds from getting in your water. Make sure you leave slack at the end of your string once tied.

Step Five:

Tie the end of the string to your coffee cup.

Step Six:

Add water; the amount of water depends on how strong you like your coffee. You may have to try several times to find the right level for you. Make sure your “tea bag” is top up to prevent coffee grounds from getting in your water.

Step Seven:

Microwave for the desired amount of time. The hotter the water gets the more bold the flavor will be. I personally like no less than two minutes.

Step Eight:

Dunk your “tea bag” several times until the desired color is reached and disregard your “tea bag”.

You should now have a lovely cup of black coffee:

This is where I typically add my mocha mix but I left it black for the sake of this blog to allow you to see how it looks. I hope you enjoy your coffee. If you’re looking for a good brand I’ve recently fallen in love with Green Mountain Coffee. Their blueberry coffee will make your house smell so pleasent and this is a fair trade brand. Check them out on Facebook for a coupon and details on why fair trade is important. (https://www.facebook.com/GreenMountainCoffee?fref=ts)

I just tried it with a sample of ice cups (I tried the acai first) and I used a bread tie to close it up really tight. I boiled water on the stove and put the “tea bag” in a coffee cup for it to brew. I filled another 16oz cup (plastic, not glass) with ice and after the brew was complete, I poured it into my cup of ice. The ice melted quickly and the drink was still warm, so I had to add more ice. I’d recommend letting the drink cool in the coffee cup first before pouring it into your cup of ice. It was tasty, so I’d say it does work~! :)

Yes, as Lucinda stated it will still work. If the coffe says its capable of brewing over ice the water wouldn’t require being heated. (Unless the coffee’s directions state otherwise) Good luck, I hope it works for you.

I have a very finely meshed tea ball, and a dead keurig. I will be attempting this in my tea ball in the morning. :) Thanks!
